Electrocardiograph Q & A

What is an electrocardiograph?

An electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG) is a simple diagnostic procedure that uses electricity to monitor your heart health and cardiovascular function.

EKGs are entirely noninvasive.  During your appointment, your provider at Gearity Wellness Center attaches a series of electrodes, or small sensors, to your chest, abdomen, and arms. The sensors stay on your body for a few minutes and document the beat and electrical outputs of your heart.

Why would I need an EKG?

EKGs are one of the easiest ways to detect and diagnose potential heart problems, no matter your age. The team at Gearity Wellness Center uses EKGs to monitor:

  • Irregular heart rhythm
  • Previous heart attacks
  • Structural heart problems
  • Pacemakers and implants

EKGs are also beneficial if you have a family history of heart disease. Many heart-related health conditions don’t present obvious symptoms early on. An EKG can detect and alert you to potential issues.

How do I prepare for an EKG?

No special preparation is required for an EKG. EKGs are a safe and generally well-tolerated procedure. There’s no risk of an electrical shock because the electrodes attached to your body don’t emit an electrical charge.

If you take any prescription medications or supplements, make sure you disclose this to the team before you EKG.

What happens during an electrocardiograph?

An EKG is a quick procedure that’s performed at Gearity Wellness Center.

On the day of your appointment, you change into a hospital gown and lie down on an exam table. Your doctor applies 10 electrodes to your chest and arms. Each electrode sticks to your body using an adhesive, and links to a wire that connects to a control monitor. If you have thick body hair, your doctor may shave the areas to ensure the electrodes stick.

You might experience some slight discomfort when they’re removed, but the pain shouldn’t last for more than a few seconds. After applying the electrodes, you’re asked to breathe normally and lie still. While the EKG is taking place, it’s important to stay in one position. Any movement can interfere with your results. An EKG typically takes less than 10 minutes.

If you’re concerned about your risk of heart-related health problems, an EKG can provide you with peace of mind. Request your appointment at Gearity Wellness Center today by calling the office or booking online.
